Jalen Mitchell hit two threes in a row with less than nine minutes remaining in the game to help propel the Clark Atlanta University (CAU) Panthers to a 63-54 win over Georgia College and State University.
Akil Douglas continued his stellar performance by chipping in 12 points in helping the Panthers stay undefeated with their fifth win this season
Leading by only two points at the half, the Panthers applied defensive pressure to go on a 13-4 run and take a 45-36 lead with 9:25 remaining.
CAU held Georgia College to 33 percent shooting from the floor and forced 15 turnovers “The last two games we haven’t shot the ball well,” CAU head coach Darrell Walker said.
“But I’ve really been pleased with what we’ve been doing defensively. You give a team 24 points in the first half and 30 in the second, you’re going to have a chance to win.
To ice the game after Georgia College closed the gap to 58-54, CAU hit 5-for-6 free throws over the final 28 seconds in the game. CAU out-shoot Georgia College slightly 38 to 34 percent from the floor.
But, the edge came from the free-throw line with CAU making 18 to 13 free throws for the Bobcats.
For CAU, Douglas had five rebounds and steal to go with his 12 points while Damien Davis and Austin Donaldson both had eight points, with Davis pulling down six rebounds and Donaldson adding three steals,
three assists and three boards. Kohl Roberts led Georgia College with 13 points and eight rebounds, and Issac Thomas, who had 12 points and eight rebounds.
