ATLANTA, GA – The Yellow Jackets accumulated 543 total yards while holding the Alcorn State Braves to 146 total yards and 2 of 11 third down conversion enroute to an easy 41-0 victory. “Anytime you can win in a dominate fashion that’s a positive.” Georgia Tech Head Coach Paul Johnson said in his opening statement. But offensively the head coach had some concerns, “For as many guys as we had returning on offense that was a pretty soppy performance.” “Defensively, the effort was certain better than the offense,” said Johnson.
The Braves took on Georgia Tech looking for its first-ever win over a Power-Five Conference institution and extending their season-opener wins to three. Alcorn State’s roster has 11 Preseason All-Conference selections to include senior running back P.J. Simmons who was named the Preseason Offensive Player of the Year. The game ended with Alcorn State accumulating just 77 rushing yards versus Georgia Tech’s 439 rushing yards and star running back Simmons being held to 47 yards on 10 carries. Still, Alcorn State head coach Fred McNair saw some positives to build on. In coach McNair opening statement he said, … “We came out and played hard today. The defense played exceptionally well for most of the way, especially having to adjust to the way Georgia Tech plays with the triple option.” “The offense had some opportunities, but we weren’t able to execute on a couple passes. We’ll get better. We showed some good spurts on offense but we need more consistency. This game definitely made us tougher and we did a good job of battling.”
